Bolghatty the bridge Lulu centre and land matters New road on the back waters Pachalam - Vaduthala

Blow hot, blow cold, the CPM is not sure whether to support Mr. Yousaf Ali MA on building a new convention centre at Bolghatty.

In one of the rarest of cases, initially,  all parties had supported Lulu Mall man Yousaf Ali.  On the face of it, he is just a business man, who does not have enemies. Every one is his friend. VS Achuthanandan  supports him openly. Pinarayi Vijayan said no one in his party will oppose Lulu Mall.

How is this achieved. Ask Mohammed Usman, auto rickshaw driver.  He was plying around BTS Road near Changanpuzha nagar. The route was dug up for a cable to Lulu Mall. For the likes of him, compensation was paid by Lulu Mall.  So the mantra is pay compensation.

The container road from Vallarpadam to where ever it is going, runs along the Mulavukad island, on the western side. Mulavukad was a beautiful island, especially on the westernside, the view was just as magnificent , people could use small boats, ( vanchi in Malayalam ) do fishing, take small sailing crafts  (vallam  in Malayalam) do fishing, and much more. Now there is the new road, that most people cannot use. The village island is connected  to the new road only at one point, rest of the people use private bridges and so on.

When land is reclaimed, do the local residents have any claim on it.

Now, Mr Yousalf Ali MA could come and tell the people that he would open a walk way and  play ground for the locals to enjoy themselves,  instead fencing up the all the area and making concrete monsters on the Bolghatty land. Remember the land belongs to locals, thank you.

There are jobs and jobs, in oil companies.  This word oil refers to hydrocarbons, and that would mean gas as well.  Mostly they have been producing oil and word is stuck. Gas is big, and now many countries convert gas into oil or let us call it liquid.
Oil companies mostly outsource their jobs. Enter contractors. Now manpower ratio of oil company versus contractor is  1:6 on a rough estimate.  So job scope increases when you bring in Contractors to the band.

What are the jobs? Start from the CEO.  He could have been a geologist, or a petroleum engineer, never ever a Chartered accountant or Economist.

Oil Industry, mostly does exploration, drilling , production, refining, and distribution. Shell  Oil once stated that, they were refining more than they produced, and retailed more than they refined.

Anyone or everybody could be part of the oil company pay roll. At the lower rung, there is room cleaner, garbage collector, tea boy, plumber, carpenter, tree pruner, there are all kinds of jobs in oil  industry. The catch is that, all these jobs are mostly outsourced, and jobs are with contractors. The contractors are there for one year, two year some times five years, and job security is the last thing here.

Who is a contractor. Well, answer is who is not a contractor?  Take the case of  (fictitious name here) Rock Oil Arabia Resources. (ROAR for short).  ROAR is a joint venture, and partners own it at the ratio 40:60.  The partners pay capex and opex at the same ratio every year and ROAR produces oil. ROAR does not own the oil, the partners take it away. So technically ROAR  has a contractor roll. ROAR  has staff in the city based head quarters, and men on the fields. Just the same actual work is done by contractors, like seismic survey, drilling, front end design, detailed design, installation of well heads, pipelines, processing plants, pumping stations, transport including air transport, training of staff, the list goes on.

The contractor , same time appoints sub contractors. Some one who does the cementing of wells ( pouring cement between the drilled holes and liners called casing) does just the cementing. The cementing crew of this contractor will have all sorts of helpers, called rough necks locally, hired from other contractors. Small factories mounted on 24 wheeled trucks would be hauled by a transport contractors.  Well, what am leading to tell you is, every little job is oil related, including that of the tireman (tyreman) to takes care of tyres of all those vehicles, mostly heavy.  Did you know that every camp has its own petrol pump (that is the name, but diesel is the only fuel in the fields).

Contracts and trade will include terms of engagement, enter the lawyer. Every oil company worth its name has a Legal Department. Every rig has a medic, basically a male nurse, who is trained to drive an ambulance to the nearest airstrip. Enter the male nurse.

No matter what you are, there is job for you in the oil industry. Many oil companies run their airlines, even TV stations. Editors, translators, drivers, photographers, well watchmen.

In every camp, including mobile camp on trailers, there are masjids. (Mosque).  These masjids need prayer leaders, who also call out to remind on prayer timings.   Is there any other industry that would employ a priest?

Now you see that, no matter what you are there is job. In my camp, there are room cleaners, cooks, airconditioner mechanic, to add a few. Hey who would wash your clothes and press them. Laundry department takes care of them.

How get here. Use old boy network, friends, their friends, or wives.  Wives?  Well, it is like this.  When Mrs RN who had to stay in India for six months, some one volunteered to work as a maid in her house. Live in maid that is. Let us call the willing live in maid as Mrs. VR.  Mrs VR  has, now her husband and two brothers in law in the oil industry. For, Mr RN is a manager in ROAR.  If you have your cousins, friends, etc in the industry, well, this helps you.

Being there. If you have lots of friends, in the oil industry in the Gulf, well, go to  that country, stay there  and send word to your friends (word in the shape of CV also known as bio-data in India).  There, sudden vacancies crop up, and they will need some one who could join in TOMORROW.  Very expensive option,  it worked for many.  This is possible when you can pay for your ticket, and and need not pay for accommodation and food. Well, many brothers, go visiting their sisters living in the Gulf of Arabia, stay there for several weeks and find jobs. Ideally you need skill sets. Otherwise you will wind up as a gardener, or fuel man, these jobs pay very poorly.

Most job seekers with low ( forgive that expression) level skills come to these Oil rich countries, by paying hefty bribes to recruiters who may be linked to some officials in the oil rich countries.   Chandra, whom I met  today tells me that he pay something equaivalent to 7 months of salary for his job as a waiter.  He was told, this job job is in a hotel. He would have dreamt of tips topping his salary. He is now in a desert camp,  as contractor staff. No tips here.

Register in on line sites. If you have experience in oil industry territory, mention oil industry in your CV, search machines will pick you up for an interview.

This is an electronic age, write mails to your friends in their private mail address. Women play an important role in this.  Here is a case, where a woman opened her husband's  mail, read a sad story, and told her husband, let us bring him in. (Believe it or not, these things happen).

Talk to any one or everybody.  Ravi Chidambram now works for Shell in Abu Dhabi. He met his neighbour who was home on leave from Abu Dhabi. Asked ablout  job prospects, email was given, and in three months, Ravi made his move from Madurai to Abu Dhabi. Don't forget, you need  qualifications for quality job.

Read important news papers  when they have weekly employment advertisements. Lots of jobs are advertised, so read out of town papers who carry these type ads.

Skill set improvement. You may know your job, can you communicate. Invest in language skill. Spoken, English and Arabic is important. Invest  your time and money for that.

You will never fail.
